Shimpaku Juniper is found wild all over Japan, but the most famous is the naturally grown shimpaku in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. In the past, most Juniper cypresses were collected from mountainous areas, and many Japanese gardeners went deep into mountainous areas across the country to look for wild juniper cypresses. Due to over-harvesting, the number of Shikoku shimpaku juniper has been drastically reduced.

Among them, the cypress trees on the cliffs of Mt. Meijo and Mt. Kurohime in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture are nationally famous. The mountains around the Itoigawa River are mainly composed of limestone, and shimonoseki generally grows on cliffs hundreds of meters high.

The Itoigawa juniper cypress thrives on the steep rock faces, attracting people's attention with its graceful form. The leaves are densely packed and dark green in color. The delicate leaves and tough trunk together form the unique charm of the juniper, attracting countless enthusiasts.
