An Itoigawa Shimpaku in a Hong Kong Home

An Itoigawa Shimpaku in a Hong Kong Home

Of the photographs this customer sent us, the first caught my attention most.

It does not show the bonsai directly, only its shadow on the curtain. Beside it are a speaker and a wooden cabinet: an ordinary corner made worth another look by the outline of a tree. We usually try to photograph every branch and trunk detail. This image reminded me that a tree can also be appreciated through a curtain.

Draw back the curtain and the Itoigawa Shimpaku appears. A simple black stand and dark pot leave the tree’s form to speak for itself.

The foliage opens in layers, with spaces revealing the branches within. The trunk twists upwards, pale deadwood meeting darker bark. These are details to enjoy slowly; looking only at the neatness of the canopy can mean missing the most interesting part.

Behind it are the familiar high-rise buildings of Hong Kong. Rows of windows and glass walls contrast with the winding trunk. The bonsai remains part of the city, while bringing a little of a mountain landscape to the window.

When we introduce a bonsai, we often discuss species, dimensions and form. Customer photographs reveal another part of its story: where it lives at home and the angle from which it is enjoyed. The same tree can feel different against a new background.

Placement also needs to support the tree’s care. A photograph alone cannot tell us whether light and airflow are sufficient. If you are considering a Shimpaku for your home, send us photographs of the space and details of its light, and we can discuss the conditions together.

Thank you to our customer for sharing these photographs. I especially like the shadow of the tree on the curtain.
