Shimpaku grows wild throughout Japan, but the most famous are those found growing naturally in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. In the past, most shimpaku were collected from mountainous areas, prompting numerous Japanese gardeners to venture into mountainous regions across the country in search of wild shimpaku. However, due to over-harvesting, the number of shimpaku trees in Shikoku has drastically decreased.

Among them, the shimanus trees on the cliffs of Mount Meimei and Mount Kurohime in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, are nationally renowned. The mountains surrounding Itoigawa are primarily composed of limestone, and shimanus trees typically grow on cliffs hundreds of meters high.

The Itoigawa shimpaku thrives on steep rock faces, captivating visitors with its graceful form. Its dense, deep green leaves, delicate in texture and sturdy trunk, combine to create a unique charm that captivates countless enthusiasts.
