Juniper is an evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the genus Juniper in the family Cupressaceae.
This plant, native to Japan, has survived in various environments including mixed forests and high mountains. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, south of Iwate Prefecture, and is commonly found on mountain ridges and along the Seto Inland Sea coast. It is also known as juniper, muro (榁), or east pine (小松). However, in recent years, the number of native species has greatly decreased. It is characterized by its sharp, slender leaves, resembling the needles of a thorny rat. Because it grows natively in wastelands, it is a very robust and easy-to-care-for tree. Its trunk and branches, with their dead, skeletal appearance, are attractive, and its unique weight and texture add to its style.
However, with the rise in popularity after the war, most of it has been consumed, and recently, there is very little juniper left in the mountains.
Juniper, also known as mountain juniper, has stiff leaves with sharp tips. However, Japanese juniper and the Yatsufusa variety have softer leaves and are easier to care for, making them popular varieties. Juniper leaves are about 1 to 3 centimeters long, arranged in groups of three, with each leaf growing in a different direction.
